There has been a long debate regarding the usage of gymnastics grips. The main question posed is whether the grips are necessary or not. However the opinion of majority is that the upper level gymnasts need them the most. You may wonder what these gymnastics grips are and how they are used. They are made of leather and they are used to protect the hands of the gymnast. They are used when one practices in uneven bars.

There are so many advantages of using gymnastics grips. The performer would be able to grasp the bar in a better way and reduce the risk of slipping off the bar. This gives that grip that is needed when practicing in a smooth bar or uneven bar. You will get your palm ripped off if you use these gymnastics grips. The two different types of grips are used namely dowel gymnastics grips and palm gymnastics grips. The palm grips are used to protect the palm against injuries. They are used by beginners who do not possess hard bar skills. Dowel grip is used by the skillful competitive performer and this covers the palm as well as the fingers. This is used to exhibit swing and release skills.

You have to wear the gymnastics grips around your wrist and fasten them with the buckles or Velcro provided. Those gymnastics grips meant for kids come with Velcro so that the kids would be able to put it on and take it off easily. The dowel grips have buckle and they are useful when one performs harder skills. You can choose one with Velcro or with buckles. The choice is yours. But not every performer uses grips. Some like them and some do not.

Though the gymnastics grips are not mandatory for performing gymnastics they are helpful in a number of ways. But still some gymnasts consider them as a nuisance. Only if you start doing harder swing and release technique on the bars you will need these gymnastics grips. Sometimes even your coach would decide whether you need them or not. If you need them, then you may have to select from the two available options based on your skill level.

The gymnastics grips come in different sizes and you can get the help of your coach to find the right size for you. You have to measure your hands to find the size. Some use them together with wrist bands to prevent the grips from slipping down.
